QUANDO ESTOU ENTRE AMIGOS
Quando estou entre amigos ouço a tabla
e o derbak em contratempo, a flauta
soa semitônica, destreza;
adequo minha voz às vibrações da areia,
danço e bebo arak,
celebrando o semitismo onipresente que portamos no
genoma.

Quando estou entre amigos ouço o salmo
e a alma abençoada se contorce
no ritmo do jazz judaizado que John Zorn
derrama de sua corneta dourada
em que ressoam os gritos de Massada.

Quando estou entre amigos, confortável,
recosto-me qual rei nas almofadas;

revelo-me as madeixas enroladas
que encimo com a yamaka fiada
pelas mãos da minha mãe, outra exilada,
e oculto-me no manto finda a benção

do quanto que é difícil encontrá-los;
há aqueles que nem sabem seu status
mais outros que ignoram plenos fatos
e rechaçam quem se entende e quem se aceita.

Quando estou entre amigos eu descanso
e discuto as dúvidas de que jamais
nos livraremos.
Refazemos os caminhos derradeiros
por escrito, nossas páginas ardentes
portam linhas granuladas bem medidas
benfazejas.

Quando estou entre amigos uma prece
sem vergonha eu recito,
ainda atropelada, leio as Letras
traduzindo-as às letras do inimigo.

Quando estou entre amigos reconheço
a áurea silhueta da cidade e, liberdade!
Meu sentir dilacerado se converte
(finalmente)
em sentir-se por inteiro.

WHEN I AM AMONGST FRIENDS
When I am amongst friends I hear the tabla
and the darabouka in contratempo, the flute
sounds semitone, dexterous;
I adjust my voice to the vibrations of sand,
dance and drink arak,
celebrating the omnipresent semitism we carry in our
genome.

When I am amongst friends I hear the psalm
and the soul blessedly writhes
in the rhythm of Judaic jazz that John Zorn
pours out of his golden cornet
in which resonates the cries of Massada.

When I am amongst friends, comfortable,
I lie back like a king in the pillows;
I run so much, it is necessary to break
this interminable exile.

When I am amongst friends I almost forget
that my great grandfather José fled from Spain
and took root in Sorocaba,
to lose the dream
in the Vargas dictatorship and horse races.

When I am amongst friends not defeated,
I reveal the curling locks
that topped with the yamaka laid
by the hands of my mother, another exile,
and I conceal myself in the closed cloak the blessing
that orders four tassels, well-braided,
to girdle me on the sides, hanging.

When I am amongst friends they do not complain
about how long I took on my way back
and neither how much I speak of the Marranos
their deeds and the ships which they wrecked
greater than Moses, an Atlantic
ocean, in the anonymous odyssey
sung by no one in this brazier.

When I’m amongst friends I realize
that it is difficult to find them;
there are those that do not even know their status
but others still who ignore plain facts
and refuse those who understand and accept.

When I am with my friends I rest
and I discuss the doubts that we
never escape from.
We restore the final paths
by writing, our burning pages
carry well-measured granular lines
benevolently.

When I am amongst friends I recite
a prayer without shame,
yet effaced, I read the lyrics
translating them to the letters of my enemy.

When I am amongst friends I recognize
the aureate silhouette of the city and, freedom!
My torn feelings convert
(finally)
into a sense of the whole.
